Ramadan Duaa, and Advice from the Habaib

4 Aug

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

Sayyiduna Salman narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) spoke to the Companions on the last day of Sha’ban. He informed them that they were about to enter a great and blessed month, a month in which there is a night better than a thousand nights. He mentioned some of the merits of the month of Ramadan. Then he said: “Do four things in abundance: two things with which you please your Lord, and two things which you cannot do without. As for the two things with which you please your Lord: your testification that there is nothing worthy of worship other than Allah and your seeking His forgiveness. As for the two things which you cannot do without: your asking Allah for Paradise and seeking refuge in Him from the Fire.” 1

The Messenger of Allah taught al-Sayyida ‘A’isha to say on Laylat al-Qadr : “O Allah, truly You are all-Pardoning, You love to pardon so pardon us.” 2

On the basis of these two hadiths the scholars and people of Tarim repeat the following du’a throughout the month of Ramadan:

أشْهَدُ أن لا إلهَ إلا الله نَسْتَغْفِرُ الله نسأَلُكَ الجنَّةَ ونَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ النَّار

Ashadu alla ilaha illallah, nastaghfirullah, nas’aluk’l-jannata wa na’audhu bika min an-nar

“I testify that there is nothing worthy of worship other than Allah and we seek the forgiveness of Allah. We ask You for Paradise and take refuge in You from the Fire.” (3 times)

اللهمَّ انَّكَ عَفُوٌ تُحبُّ العفْوَ فَاعْفُ عَنَّا (3) يا كريم

Allahumma innaka ‘afuwun tuhibbu-l”afwa f’afwa ‘anna

“O Allah, truly You are all-Pardoning, You love to pardon so pardon us” (3 times). On the third time say “O Most Generous” (Ya Karim).

Advices from the Habaib;

To read Surah Fath on the first night of Ramadan, make ghusl and intend to fast for the entire month as Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala gazes upon His slaves on this night.

To break ones fast at Iftar with 3, 5 or 7 dates in preparation for the night of Laylatul-Qadr.

Recite Quran by day and by night.

Pray 20 rakahs of tarawih.

Control the tongue during the day.

In the last ten nights recite the dua of the Prophet sallalahu alaiyhi wasalam much – Allahumma innaka afuwwun tuhibbul afwa fa’fu anna.

Observe the suhoor even if it is little.

Don’t argue or dispute with others (especially in the last 10 days).

If Jumuah falls on an odd night in the last 10 days, bring it to life as it is likely that it is the night of Laylatul Qadr.

If one goes to the masjid, make an intention for i’tikaaf to increase ones reward.

When you enter the masjid, make an oath to pray 20 rakahs/i’tikaaf, it now becomes wajib for you to complete this oath and the reward is seventy times more for performing a wajib.

It is a duty upon you to meet this month with happiness and thankfulness.

May Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala accept of us our Ramadan, and look upon us with a gaze of mercy. Ameen.
